Wider Study & A Level Mindset

Wider Study at Lutterworth College is designed to help Sixth Form students make the transition from taught learners to more independent and proactive students. The programme structures the work which takes place in designated non-contact periods across a student’s two-week timetable, by asking students to submit evidence of Wider Study for allocated subjects during a subject-specific period.

Wider Study encompasses:

  • wider reading, viewing and listening, such as critical material, podcasts, Youtube documentaries.
  • consolidatory work, such as rewriting lessons notes or review questions.
  • revision exercises, such as mind maps or flashcards.
  • skills practice, such as specific art, music or software techniques.
  • completion of UpLearn activities, in subjects where this is relevant.
  • extension activities such as the How to Fly suite provided by subjects.

All Year 12 and 13 students will allocate their desired periods at the beginning of the year, ensuring they have a Wider Study period for each of their subjects across the two-week timetable. For most students, this will equate to three Wider Study periods over a fortnight.

During the designated period they will complete work for their chosen subject, and then ask for it to be signed off as appropriate and complete by a member of Sixth Form/Library/Q Zone staff. This formalises the broader work that is expected of Sixth Form students and asks for accountability to ensure students get into good study habits from an early stage of their Sixth Form careers. Please note that Wider Study is expected in addition to the recommended five hours per subject of independent study or homework, students are expected to complete each week.

Wider Study may also coincide with the A Level Mindset programme delivered in mentor time in both Year 12 and Year 13. This is a programme designed to develop effective independent study skills with associated weekly reflection and tasks (1 hour a week in addition to mentor time and Wider Study). Students may use their Wider Study period to extend the specific study skills taught in the A Level Mindset task, by putting into practice the skills taught.

Wider Study was introduced as a cornerstone of the Sixth Form experience in 2021 and has gone from strength to strength, allowing us to celebrate the wider work students undertake and to establish the high expectations, and more holistic approach, required in order to succeed at A Level and BTEC.
